Custom Piping

Ever wanted to make custom piping for your sewing projects? Ever wanted to know how to cut it perfectly on the bias? Well, here is a little trick that, once you get the hang of it, will allow you to make yards and yards of piping quickly, easily, and perfectly every time.

1. Take a piece of the fabric you want to use. Use a large piece so that you will not have as many seams and will get a better bias. I don't know an exact ratio, but you will always get more piping than you expect.

2. Fold the fabric right-sides together and pin. Sew along all 3 open sides with a tight 1/2" seam. 3. Cut off the 4 corners. Make sure to go all the way through the seam you just made.

4. Cut a slit from one corner to the other, through ONLY 1 layer of fabric.

It should look like this:
5. Here comes a tricky part: Flip the fabric over. Pick the fabric up from the opposite corners (the corners that you did not use to cut the slit). Pull tight and lay back down. Iron the seams flat. Cut along the top from corner to corner. You now, hopefully, have a circle of fabric with odd seams at strange angles.
6. About 1/3 of the way from the left, mark a straight vertical line. Along this line, mark every 1.75" all the way down.
7. Mark every 1.75" down the far right side as well.
8. Connect the 1.75" marks.
9. Cut along the lines you just drew. Cut only up to the vertical line you drew 1/3 of the way from the left. DO NOT cut all the way through the whole fabric. You will just end up with a bunch of loops.
10. Open of the fabric and lay it back down with the cut strips out of the way and the uncut part of the fabric flat.
11. Careful: Draw a line from the top of the top left loop to the bottom of the top right loop. Continue drawing lines like this all the way down. The lines should be at an angle, connecting one strip to the one below it on the opposite side. If your lines are straight, you will end up with loops again.
12. Cut the fabric following your newest lines and you should have one, long, continuous strip of piping cut perfectly on the bias.
13. Wrap the piping fabric around the cording and sew with a large stitch and a zipper foot.
14. And there you go! Yards and yards of perfect piping! These measurements are for standard 1/4" cording. For thicker cording, adjust your measurements accordingly.
Crafty Trails!
